On Tuesday, June 19th, Medea Benjamin, along with Samantha Deer and Rae Abileah, met with Senator Dianne Feinstein's State Director Jim Molinari to discuss the international situation with US drones. Medea shared her plan on how to stop US drone strikes against people in Pakistan and Yemen. First, we need to take drones out of the hands of the CIA. It is illegal for the CIA to have control of these weapons and under international law, they can actually be considered unlawful combatants. In response, Molinari stated that we (the US) need drones in the Middle East, or else we would have to put our boots back on the ground. Although it was questioned why drones were needed at all when the Pakistani people have expressed their wishes to remove the United States from the country, and when there is no longer a clear enemy to fight against, Molinari continued to say that we are never getting out of Pakistan and we have to stay to keep down the Taliban. Closing his remarks, Molinari chose to quote Colin Powell in saying, "If you break it, you own it." Despite our attempts to repeat the clear facts showing that drones are more hurtful than helpful, the message was not well received. However, at Medea's book tour event that night in Berkeley, there was a large showing of support to get the drones away from the CIA. There is now a petition, signed by many California voters, that will be sent to Feinstein for this cause. Related News Article: http://codepink.org/article.php?id=6064 |
