Today I initiated the first session of a weekly Yoga for Peace class, a new addition to the on-going "How Berkeley Can U Be" counter-recruitment effort at the Marine Recruiting Center. I arrived at 8:30 am to find the colorful chalked anti-war messages left from yesterday's Codepink counter recruitment work. Soon after, a recruiter arrived and quickly got the hose out. As he was washing off the truths from the sidewalk, I had a discussion with him about all the reasons why he should consider another line of work.....finishing the discussion inside, by his invitation. A bit later, I layed my yoga mat on the sidewalk, under the soft winter sun, and began with the calming sun salutation. Passersby were encouraged to sign our petition of support. After being revitalized and nurtured from a too often neglected yoga practice.........I spent a bit of time to add new colorful chalked peace truths for the recruiters and recruitees before I left. Wonder if they are still there now. Hoping others will join me next week. growing in peace with yoga, Toby |
