Counter-recruitment Forum at Laney College February 9, 2008Bay Area CODEPINK Oakland, CA | ||

Bay Area CODEPINK brought our bright pink presence to the counter-recruitment forum at Laney College in Oakland, which kicked off a week of counter-recruitment/antiwar actions in Oakland. Zanne had a table outside the auditorium; Janet had one inside. Zanne and Janet spoke about the campaign to shut down the Marines Officer Recruiting Office in Berkeley, and the zoning initiative to keep future recruiters for the US military, OR military contractors such as Blackwater, at least 600 feet away from schools and residential areas. Several other speakers mentioned Code Pink with obvious respect and attention to the details of the Berkeley campaign. Author, conscientious objector and KPFA radio host Aimee Allison spoke encouragingly on "the big picture" of counter-recruitment across the nation, specifically mentioning the Chicago area where all military recruiting was shut down for a day. Aimee and co-author David Solnit have finished a book tour for "Army of None." Aimee talked of the importance of one-to-one conversations and gave an example of talking a young woman out of joining the military and becoming a firefighter! The participants in the youth panel, including college and high school students, were articulate, thoughtful, wonderful. One young member of World Can't Wait, gave a brief "people's" history of the Marine Corps and (neo) colonialism that was brilliant. |
