Breasts Not Bombs at the MRS June 13, 2008East Bay CODEPINK Berkeley, CA | ||

Sherry Glaser Love of Breasts Not Bombs stood tall on her soapbox in front of the Marines Recruiting Station wearing a shirt that said 'security'. She spoke about what was indecent -- specifically war, torture and rape. People in the crowd called out other items that are NOT indecent like boobs, women and children. Sherry spoke about our need to show our vulnerability in order to use the power that is held by the people and not by the police or the New World Order. The crowd paused and reflected, then the moment arrived and women (and male supporters) removed their shirts. There was a large banner unrolled that read Breasts Not Bombs with lots of really great chanting and singing as always. A few minutes later the police announced that women would be cited and clothes were to be put back on right away. A mini-wagon arrived right on time to complete the intimidation. All activists without missing a beat kept on singing and chanting as they put their shirts back on. Male supporters kept their shirts off. At one point later on Pamela Bennett lifted her shirt again while holding a banner. She kept it up for a minute or so and then put it back down. Ten minutes later the cops handcuffed her and took her away to the jailhouse in their car. The crowd of people there chanted "This is what a police state looks like" while they were arresting her. We had four sets of amazing large balloon props that were a fantasic visual! Afterwards we circled and talked about what was important to each of us and how Pam's arrest had affected us. Everyone was outraged that the men could bare their breasts but the women could not. Soon there were multiple calls going out into the community to gather help and resources to get Pam out of jail and safe. Related News Article: http://www.kpfa.org/archives/index.php?arch=26818 |
